HITGS: Hip, Innocent, Teenage, Girls, Story.

The five-member girl group debuted back in April. Thousands of album sales from day one raised questions among netizens. While numbers are a point of contention, their sound is what drew me to a review.

"Sourpatch" starts off with a summery, fresh, and transparent background. Like many frutiger-aero-themed tracks that are taking over in popularity, the intro has a sense of nostalgia for anyone in the retro tech algorithm. The bassline is rooted in bossa nova syncopated rhythm, giving the groove a hypnotic feel. The first few seconds gave me high hopes.

The opening chorus showcases our first glimpse of their vocals. The vocals are airy and fun. Lyrically, the content is young, carefree, and endearing. The song glides through to the end in an effortless way, even with the rap verse. Iyoo delivers a verse as soft as marshmallows with just enough oomph and style while not being overbearing; a pleasant balance.

"Never Be Me" was an unexpected track. Right from the beginning, I got hit with an 80s synthwave. The sound is familiar enough to feel nostalgic, yet fresh with new voices. The delayed surf guitar filled the space of the chorus superbly. This track did so much to showcase the performance and talents of the group. It captured a memory—a moment stuck in time. It's a Southern California nighttime cruise. It's that beach day during summer break.

I thoroughly enjoyed this debut for successfully executing nostalgic sounds with fresh voices. "Never Be Me" will definitely be on my driving playlist.
